Welcome to our Knowledge Session, focusing on the “weekend warrior” — the recreational sports enthousiast who sometimes lacks time, but never ambition. We invite performance coaches, trainers, entrepreneurs, sport scientists and others interested in finding out what’s in it for the weekend warrior to join us in this session. This is an opportunity to enhance your understanding of training approaches and strategies for performance progression and injury prevention.

Programma

14:00 – 14:25 Ellen Maas, Topsport Topics: what training works for the weekend warrior?

Topsport Topics aims to promote (elite) sports by providing staff of national elite sports programs with state of the art, evidence-based information. Ellen will share what training advice can be extracted from the scientific literature for the “weekend warrior” — the recreational amateur athlete who balances training with so many other things in life.

Ellen obtained her master’s degree in Movement Sciences at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She earned her PhD at KU Leuven with a dissertation on the biomechanics of running. Since 2018, Ellen has been working for Topsport Topics. Here, she mainly addresses topics related to cyclic sports, biomechanics and strength training.

14:30 – 14:55 Wattcycling and Richie Goulding: Watt’s up with the weekend-warrior?

Erik Landman and Henk-Jan Zwolle of Wattcycling, and Richie Goulding from VU Amsterdam are collaborating on a joint research project focused on the “weekend warrior.” Their recent findings shed light on the unique physiological and psychological aspects of this disciplined recreational amateur athlete. They will talk about their recent findings and future perspectives in their joint research project on cycling enthousiasts.

Erik Landman and Henk-Jan Zwolle are both owners of Wattcycling, where they focus on optimizing athletic performance through evidence-based training. Their combined expertise in exercise physiology and sports science drives the development of innovative training programs for ahtletes. Richie Goulding, affiliated with Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, specializes in exercise science, particularly in injury prevention and performance enhancement. His work complements the objectives of Wattcycling, aiming to enhance athletic training through scientific principles.

 

14:55 – 15:20 Jasper Reenalda, University of Twente: What can wearable sensors do for the weekend warrior? 

Jasper Reenalda explores the intricacies of running, focusing on common running injuries and the role of ambulatory sensors in injury prediction and prevention as well as performance enhancement for weekend warriors. By utilizing wearable technology, Jasper aims to gather real-time data on the biomechanics of running, which can help identify risk factors for injuries specific to this group. Part of his work is on developing new sensor based technologies and models to help runners run further and faster without injuries.
